The San Diego Zoo has free parking. The parking lot in front of the Zoo is owned and operated by the City of San Diego and is used by guests, volunteers and employees of Balboa Park.  (Zoo employees use a private lot to leave open spaces for visitors in the city lot directly in front of the Zoo.)  The parking lots in and around Balboa Park are also free to the public, per city guidelines. Due to the unique arrangement with the City of San Diego, the San Diego Zoo is one of the few attractions in the county that do not charge for parking. This is a great benefit to members and guests of the San Diego Zoo!

The San Diego Zoo is a very popular destination and during peak attendance days (holidays; weekends during spring break, summer and December) we may have short periods of time during which the city-owned parking lot in front of the Zoo is full. At these times we encourage guests to park in overflow parking (Inspiration Point, on the east side of Park Boulevard, between Presidents Way and the Balboa Park Activity Center) and either walk or take available tram services (available in the parking lots by the Navy Hospital at the south end of Park Boulevard) that serve Balboa Park.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park parking lot is privately owned and has a parking fee. Please click here for current Safari Park parking fees. Payment can be made by credit or debit card or cash (no $100 bills). As a nonprofit organization, San Diego Zoo Global depends on money raised from memberships, admission, food and gift shop sales, and Safari Park parking fees to assist in maintaining the animals in our care and further our mission of conservation and education.

No overnight parking is permitted at either park, other than for guests participating in scheduled sleepover programs.

Parking reminders: Lock your vehicle; lock your valuables out of sight; park within marked stalls; Zoo parking violations will be cited by municipal law enforcement.  The owners and operators of our parks herby specifically disclaim any responsibliity, expressed or implied, to protect against the loss of or damage to your vehicle or its contents.

The parking lot in front of the San Diego Zoo does not have designated RV or bus parking spaces. It is a municipal parking lot with accompanying enforcement by the San Diego Police Department. We recommend guests with RVs park along Park Boulevard in front of the Zoo or at the Inspiration Point parking lot (on the east side of Park Boulevard, between Presidents Way and the Balboa Park Activity Center) for easy access to the Zoo and the heart of Balboa Park via the free tram. The parking lot on the south side of Inspiration Point has designated full-size/striped RV and bus parking spaces. The parking lots around Balboa Park are free to the public, per city guidelines.

The Safari Park's parking lot is open and available for RV/bus parking during normal business hours. It has spaces dedicated for large vehicles and parking staff will direct you to the appropriate location to park your oversized vehicle. Please click here for current Safari Park parking fees. The Safari Park does not permit overnight parking except for our Roar and Snore sleepover guests.

The Zoo, located adjacent to downtown San Diego in Balboa Park, is 100 acres in size. It is well known for its lush, naturalistic habitats and unique animal encounters and is home to more than 3,700 rare and endangered animals representing approximately 660 species and subspecies and a prominent botanical collection with more than 700,000 plants. It is viewed in several ways, first and foremost by walking along pathways, into aviaries, and through bioclimatic zones. There is a 35-minute Guided Bus Tour that gives a good overview of the Zoo, along with an Express Bus that stops at several locations to assist guests in accessing different areas. We suggest taking the Guided Bus Tour upon your arrival to acquaint yourself with the various areas where you would like to spend additional time. The Zoo is a unique walking experience that exhibits animals in the most natural way possible, adding shows and animal presentations throughout the day for additional enjoyment. No.  The Safari Park is and always has been a walk-through sanctuary in which members and guests can purchase optional guided Safari tours to enhance their visits and get closer to animals.  Please see our Special Experiences on the Experiences page for more information about these exciting tours and programs!

Occasionally, nostalgic visitors confuse the Safari Park with an unaffiliated, drive-through animal attraction bearing a similar name that was once located 77 miles north of the Safari Park in the Irvine/Laguna Hills area.  That attraction operated from 1970 – 1984.  The site was then repurposed and spent 25 years as a water park before becoming what is now a community of upscale apartment homes.

It's possible, but we don't recommend it.

Although one can easily enjoy a full day or more at both parks, to visitors with limited time we recommend a minimum of three to four hours to see some of the Zoo and a minimum of four to six hours to experience a portion of the Safari Park.

Our facilities are open every day of the year, including all holidays, rain or shine!

Depending on the extent of rain, some animals (primates, specifically) may choose to go into their off-exhibit bedroom areas, although many animals seem unaffected by rain.

Animals may be taken off exhibit for a variety of reasons including environmental conditions, health issues, and behavioral concerns. In addition, many of our exhibits are designed to allow animals to remove themselves from visitor view at any time.

For these reasons, it is not always possible to predict or note these exceptions before the fact. For a report on current Zoo weather, click here, and for the Safari Park, click here

Refunds or exchanges are not possible in cases of inclement weather, excessive heat or exhibit closure.

There really isn’t any special time that more animals are in view, although many of our animals are “early risers” and may be a bit more active in the morning. In our concern for the many endangered species that we house at our facilities, we have built exhibits that mimic natural environments. Like natural environments, these areas give the animals plenty of room to hide. We have found the ability to hide is important to the well-being of many species.

Animals may be taken off exhibit for a variety of reasons including environmental conditions, health issues, and behavioral concerns. In addition, many of our exhibits are designed to allow animals to remove themselves from visitor view at any time.

The popular Petting Paddock in the Children’s Zoo allows kids (and kids at heart) a chance to feel the wooly coat of a sheep or comb a gentle goat’s hair. The Zoo's Animals in Action program and Inside Look Tour get you VERY close to exotic animals. At the Safari Park, the Petting Kraal offers a very satisfactory tactile experience. Also at the Park is Lorikeet Landing, where you lend a hand—literally—in feeding the lorikeets! The Park’s interactive Animal Encounters program gives you an opportunity to have face-to-face contact with the Park’s animal ambassadors like a cheetah, alligator, serval, and other rare and exotic animals. You may interact with trainers and ask questions about the species. Interactions happen throughout the Park; check your Park map insert for times and locations. And (most of) our Special Experiences at both parks are uniquely designed to get you closer to animals!

Unused Guest Admission coupons issued in conjunction with the current membership term will be accepted through the current expiration date of the associated membership.  For example, a member's current coupons have a printed expiration date of 9/19/17 and their current membership term expires on 11/30/17.  Their unused Guest Admission coupons will be accepted through 11/30/17.  (Memberships always expire on the last day of the month, regardless of the day you joined.)

For coupons printed prior to September 6, 2017, the expiration date printed on member Guest Admission coupons was always 365 days from the date the coupon was printed and did not always match the associated membership's expiration date.  For example, members who renewed early or purchased prior to the last day of a month received Guest Admission coupons on which the printed expiration date did not match the actual expiration date of the associated membership.   Members who join or renew on or after September 6, 2017 will receive Guest Admission coupons that expire on the associated membership's expiration date.

An authorization or pending “hold” is a banking industry practice of authorizing electronic transactions made with a debit or credit card and holding this balance as unavailable either until the merchant “clears” the transaction (also called “settlement”) or the hold “drops off.” When a guest inadvertently charges a card multiple times during the same transaction, more than one hold can appear on the account.

Basically, when a debit or credit card number is submitted, it is transmitted as an electronic inquiry to determine if funds are available to cover the potential transaction. The bank automatically places a hold on the amount until the merchant clears or “settles” the transaction (usually at the close of business each day). These holds usually drop off after one to three days, depending on the issuing bank’s policy.

Whenever possible and at the issuing bank’s request, we are happy to cooperate to resolve “pending hold” issues, but it’s important to note that while a request to release a hold can be made, not all banks will honor one. And even if they do, the release of funds may not be instant. Ultimately, merchants do not have the ability to release an authorization hold; the only entity that can do so is the issuing card’s bank.

FAQ Category:
Tickets & Discounts

Although refund requests can take up to two days to electronically process, the issuing card’s bank ultimately decides when the credit will be applied to the cardholder’s account. Depending upon when the refund is issued within the card’s statement cycle, it may take up to two cycles for an account statement to reflect a refund.
